New Jersey Firefighters Cancer Prevention Study: Toms River.

Firefighters are at an elevated risk for cancer, which may be due to both increased fire-service related exposures and behavioral risk factors. In order to understand this risk within a group of volunteer firefighters this study has four aims:

1) Conduct a survey to evaluate knowledge and attitudes about occupational and behavioral cancer risk factors, cancer prevention and screening among current and former volunteer firefighters in Toms River, New Jersey.

2)Conduct biomonitoring among Toms River Fire Department (TRFD) current and former firefighters in order to characterize exposure to environmental pollutants.

3)Conduct environmental monitoring within one or more TRFD facilities in order to assess possible exposures within fire stations.

4)Synthesize the information gathered from the survey, environmental monitoring, and biomonitoring to develop focused recommendations and targeted intervention studies for TRFD firefighters to reduce exposure and/or improve early cancer detection.
