New Gynecologic Oncology Chief Named at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey

Westfield Township Resident Tapped for Leadership Post

Darlene Gibbon, MDNew Brunswick, N.J. – A Westfield (Union County) resident has been named the new Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Darlene G. Gibbon, MD, was appointed by Robert S. DiPaola, MD, director of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is a Center of Excellence of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS).

Dr. Gibbon, who came to CINJ in 2000, completed a fellowship at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.  She most recently served as CINJ’s Clinical Director of Gynecologic Oncology and is an expert in gynecologic malignancies and the design and implementation of clinical trials that target ovarian cancer.  In addition, Gibbon has received her Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, one of only a handful of gynecologic oncologists who have done so.

Gibbon, an associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at RWJMS, also has a clinical and research interest in survivorship issues relating to adolescent and young adult cancer patients.  She has been called upon for her expertise in this area, having participated in a national progress review group for this population and having presented information at peer forums.

In her new role, Gibbon will have oversight of and responsibility for all clinical, surgical and research objectives in gynecologic oncology. “Since her arrival at CINJ, Dr. Gibbon has educated and successfully met the needs of countless patients while helping to drive gynecologic cancer research.  Because of her expertise I have every confidence that CINJ’s Gynecologic Oncology Program will continue to grow,” noted Dr. DiPaola, who also is a professor of medicine at RWJMS.

Gibbon is author or co-author of more than 16 publications.  She also serves as a member of the Advisory Boards for the Teal Tea Foundation and Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey, and is a member of the Palliative Care Task Force for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

She takes over the position from Lorna Rodriguez, MD, PhD, professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at RWJMS, who was recently named director of CINJ’s Precision Medicine Initiative.
