Physician Profile

Rebecca Burke, MD
Palliative Care Specialist

I recently joined Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey as a Palliative Care Specialist and am an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. I am thrilled to be joining the Rutgers Cancer Institute and feel that the addition of a palliative care specialist will greatly benefit patients and their families as they deal with serious and complex cancer diagnoses.

After graduating from medical school at the University of Virginia, I completed my training in Internal Medicine at Duke University. Following residency, I worked as an academic hospitalist at Duke University Medical Center, taking care of medically complex patients while supervising residents and medical students. I then moved to New Jersey and continued working as an academic hospitalist at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

While I greatly enjoyed caring for patients during times of serious illness in the hospital, I became increasingly aware of the burdens and complexity of medical care for patients and their families. I wanted to help improve communication, symptom management, and support with difficult decision making for my patients throughout their illnesses. As such, I pursued fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. During my time at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, I received specialized training in complex symptom management, advanced communication skills and supportive care for patients with serious illness.

As a palliative care specialist, I work closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons and other members of the medical team. We work together with social workers, chaplains, pharmacists and others to help provide high-quality and compassionate care with a focus on the patient as a whole. We can help bridge care and communication between the inpatient and outpatient setting. Palliative care is appropriate at any time during a serious illness and can be utilized along with curative treatments.

I am very excited to join the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and look forward to working together with this outstanding group of physicians and interdisciplinary team to further enhance cancer care for our patients.
