Cancer Support Community Central NJ and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Join Forces to Increase Access to Vital Support Services in New Brunswick

Cancer Support Community Central New JerseyBedminster, NJ – Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey (CSCCNJ) and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey have decided to formalize their partnership with the goal to expand access to psychosocial support services to patients and families served at Rutgers Cancer Institute’s New Brunswick location.

“Research shows that as many as 50% of cancer patients experience significant distress, enough to impact their quality of life and their participation in treatment. This can lead to poorer health outcomes and increased costs to patients and the health care system,” said Amy Sutton, CSCCNJ Executive Director.

Cancer Support Community Central NJ is a leader in providing evidence based programs and services intended to address the essential emotional and social issues that cancer patients and their family members experience throughout their journey. For years, CSCCNJ has been proud partners with Rutgers Cancer Institute, collaborating on the delivery of programs and acting as a community based resource for referrals.

“The vision of our organization is to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. Our joint decision to launch a more strategic partnership moves closer to that vision,” said Sutton. “By working together, we can expand access to the vital support services we offer that will complement the already existing programming and resources being provided at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.”

The organizations are partnering in order to grow the breadth of patient support services available onsite at Rutgers Cancer Institute. “By increasing access to programs offered through Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey to Rutgers Cancer Institute patients, we are placing an enhanced emphasis on serving the ‘whole’ patient.  From diagnosis and treatment to recovery and even end-of-life, our collective aim is to provide resources that will help patients and their families with the many psychosocial aspects of battling their disease. We are proud to partner with CSCCNJ in this way,” added Barbara Hale, manager of the Social Work Department at Rutgers Cancer Institute.

Cancer Support Community Central NJ is providing programs such as two, six-week workshops for cancer survivors called Cancer Transitions, a monthly Gynecological Support Group and Survivorship Support Group, individual chair-side stress management support to patients and families and other featured programs such as Planning for Peace of Mind: A Workshop on Advanced Care Planning.  This workshop will be held on March 21st from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, in Auditorium B at Rutgers Cancer Institute.
