Physician Profile

Usha Malhotra, MD
Medical Oncologist

I joined the Rutgers Cancer Institute from Roswell Park Cancer Institute where I was an Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology in the Gastrointestinal Section. I completed my fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh which was preceded by a residency at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

In the past decade we have seen a dramatic change in the management of cancer as well as availability of treatment options. This has been accomplished through application of sound scientific knowledge to design effective clinical trials. My research throughout my medical training and as faculty has been focused on gastrointestinal malignancies. I am interested in understanding the pathways involved in the process of carcinogenesis and implementing that knowledge to develop novel therapies. Being a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Association of Cancer Research provides me the opportunity to discuss of cutting-edge clinical and research findings with my peers and colleagues.

My goal is to provide my patients personalized most effective therapy options with minimal side effects. To accomplish this goal I work closely with various specialized groups including surgical oncology, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, pathology, Phase I / investigational therapeutics, and precision medicine oncology, among others. Taking care of a patient with cancer is not merely addressing the cancer but the person as a whole and that is why I approach my patients with a team which consists of compassionate advanced practice nurses, qualified oncology nurse clinicians, clinical pharmacists, nutritionists and social workers.
