Specialty Services at Overlook Hospital
Our experienced and expert physicians and oncology professionals at Overlook work together in a collaborative setting that promotes a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. All members of our care teams have been specially selected and trained to provide the highest level of care for our patients.
One of New Jersey’s leading providers of superior cancer care, The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Overlook offers cutting-edge treatments for adults and children with all types of cancer. The following specialty services are available:
Breast Center at Overlook
The Breast Center at Overlook Hospital coordinates the hospital's mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI, breast biopsy and bone densitometry services. We were one of the first hospitals in the state to use a stereotactic breast biopsy system and now offer the latest in digital mammography/CAD technology, which improves the accuracy and speed of diagnosis for our patients. In addition, our breast specialists offer breast-conserving surgery, reconstructive surgery, adjuvant and neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, hormone therapy, biotherapy and radiation therapy. Lymph node mapping with sentinel node biopsy is used to gain information that may reduce the amount of surgery needed. We also offer a number of national clinical trials to our patients.
Women's Cancer Center
At the Women's Cancer Center, a wide range of services are available to help women meet the physical and emotional challenges associated with uterine, ovarian and other gynecologic cancers. While treatment for these cancers may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy or any combination of these, our primary goal is to help women understand and manage their disease. The Center offers ovarian cancer genetics screening, an early detection program for cervical cancer, minimally invasive surgery for adnexal masses and gynecologic cancers, and participation in the Gynecologic Oncology Group trials – which gives patients access to the latest chemotherapy regimens and surgical protocols for the treatment of gynecologic cancers.
Brain Tumor Center
The Brain Tumor Center of New Jersey provides state-of-the-art surgical and medical care for patients with a variety of benign and malignant brain tumors, as well as neurological complications due to cancer. Our multidisciplinary program offers conventional diagnosis and treatment options, as well as some of the area's most sophisticated health care technology to care for patients with brain tumors, including magnetic resonance imaging with diffusion and perfusion imaging; image guided neurosurgery; and CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery. Overlook was the first hospital in the country to offer a stereotactic radiosurgery program to treat brain and extracranial tumors.
Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program
The Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program provides coordinated care of patients with thoracic cancers – including lung, throat and larynx cancers – and facilitates the rapid diagnosis and treatment of these patients. Our leading-edge treatments include laser therapy, endobronchial-implanted brachytherapy, minimally invasive surgery for high-risk patients, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), radiation and chemotherapy, as well as inclusion in national research studies on promising new drug regimens.
Gastrointestinal Program
The Gastrointestinal Program offers diagnostic testing and minimally invasive surgical treatments for all types of gastrointestinal tumors, including esophageal, stomach, colon, rectal, liver and pancreatic cancers. We were the first in New Jersey to provide three-dimensional trans rectal ultrasound with ultrasound guided biopsy for better staging and treatment in the management of colorectal cancers. We were also the first in the state to use the Hybrid Procedure that combines laparascopic and traditional surgery for malignant colon disease. We have special expertise in radiofrequency ablation, placement of hepatic artery infusion pumps and CyberKnife radiosurgery for liver and pancreatic cancer. Additionally, we now offer endoscopic ultrasound for screening, earlier diagnosis and improved staging of gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancers.
Radiation Oncology
Overlook’s Radiation Oncology Department provides the most advanced services to treat all types of tumors. Special three-dimensional treatment planning systems and a simulator are used to plan patients’ treatment regimens. The treatment team consists of board-certified radiation oncologists, medical physicist, radiation therapist, registered nurses, licensed counselor and an oncology dietitian. Overlook was the first medical center north of Baltimore to offer CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery and we currently have the second largest program in the nation for treating prostate cancer. In addition to CyberKnife, treatment modalities include high-performance linear accelerator, and brachytherapy or seed implantation.
Medical Oncology
In addition to our own facility, The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center houses a private practice – Medical Diagnostic Associates – where patients can also receive chemotherapy treatments, blood tests and treatment for blood disorders in a comfortable setting.
Clinical Research
The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center is enhanced by Atlantic Health’s partnership with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which gives our patients access to the latest innovative developments in the treatment of cancer. Patients may be eligible to participate in national clinical trials of new treatments, while remaining under the care of their primary physicians.
Hereditary Risk Assessment Program
The Hereditary Risk Assessment Program at Overlook is offered in collaboration with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey for individuals and families with a history of cancer. Our genetic counselor will collect personal medical and family history information and provide education about the genetics of cancer and the likelihood that the cancers in your family are hereditary. You will learn about genetic susceptibility testing, insurance issues, and other important information in a clear, confidential manner. Referrals to other health care professionals are provided as necessary.
Psychological Support Services
At any time during treatment, a social worker can assist patients or their family with non-medical concerns related to their diagnosis, treatment or hospitalization, including financial assistance, health care resources, work-related issues and home care needs. In addition, counselors who are dedicated exclusively to cancer care are available to meet privately with any patient or family member to discuss concerns, fears or anxieties that may accompany a cancer diagnosis. For more information, please call 908-522-5255.
Mind Body Programs
Mind body therapies empower patients to take an active role in their healing and improve the quality of their lives. Free meditation, stress reduction, guided imagery, yoga, massage therapy and Jin Shin Jyutsu are offered to help patients and their families.
Nutritional Counseling
Good nutrition is an integral part of healing and well-being. Sometimes cancer treatment may present a challenge to proper nutritional intake. Through instructional materials, group education and one-on-one counseling, our registered dietitian helps patients design an eating plan to meet their individual nutritional needs.
The Valerie Fund Children's Center
Established in 1976 as a non-profit volunteer organization, the Valerie Fund is dedicated to financially supporting a network of Children's Centers for cancer and blood disorders. These centers offer highly personalized, comprehensive medical care within regional hospitals throughout New Jersey, including the Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Memorial and the Goryeb Children’s Center at Overlook Hospital. Together, these centers form one of the largest and most advanced pediatric hematology/oncology networks of its kind in the country.
