Physician Profile

Michael E. Karellas, MD
Urologic Oncologist

I am a Board Certified urologic surgeon who specializes in the surgical treatment of genitourinary cancers, such as tumors of the bladder, testis, kidney and prostate.  My main areas of expertise are in radical cystectomy for bladder cancer and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testis cancer.  I have been at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey since 2009 after completing a three-year urologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a urology residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

As director of the bladder cancer program at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, I provide patients with a comprehensive evaluation -- and with assistance from our multidisciplinary team within our Urologic Oncology Program and the Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center.  I seek to educate patients on their treatment options so that they can make an informed decision regarding which treatment would be best for their individual situation.  Specially trained in the treatment all urologic cancers, I have a concentrated research interest in bladder cancer, and testis cancers, helping to translate such discoveries into today’s cancer treatments.

I am the author or co-author of multiple peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and serve as a content reviewer for the Journal of Urology.  I am actively involved professionally in the field of urologic oncology as a member of the American Urological Association, Society of Urologic Oncology, and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.
